This afternoon from 4:00-6:00pm, Roots of Equality is hosting a panel discussion on the Gay Press, featuring yours truly and author Mark Thompson, who has a new book out on his days as an editor at The Advocate.
In fact, Mark was my editor when I wrote for The Advocate under the late editor-in-chief, Richard Rouilard in the early 1990s. And boy, do we have stories! This was also the time of ACT UP and Queer Nation – and it was a time when LGBT people of color were rightly pressuring local gay publications such as Frontiers and the Lesbian News to be more inclusive.
We will also discuss the future of the LGBT press now that blogging is so ubiquitous. Hope you can join us.
Here’s the Roots of Equality press release and info:
Sun. November 15th, 4-6 pm

Join us as we discuss the rich history of Gay Press in Los Angeles. From Vice Versa, to the ONE Magazine, to the Advocate, and Frontiers, Los Angeles has been a hot bed of LGBT publications.
Panelists Mark Thompson and Karen Ocamb will share their years of experience discussing the pioneering path of LGBT gay press in Los Angeles and the direction it will take. The evening will be hosted by All Things Considered host Alex Cohen.
Mark Thompson is the author of several books including his trilogy of books about gay spirituality, Gay Spirit: Myth and Meaning, Gay Soul: Finding the Heart of Gay Spirit and Nature, and Gay Body: A Journey Through Shadow to Self. He was also a writer and senior editor for The Advocate. Thompson will be signing copies of his latest book, Advocate Days & Other Stories
Karen Ocamb has over 30 years of experience in the news industry. She is an award-winning journalist and former producer at CBS. Currently, she is the news editor for Frontiers In L.A. Magazine. Ocamb is also currently a freelance contributor to The Huffington Post and The Bilerco Project.
