Disputing the contention (from Bruce Wilson, among others) that he is in any way linked to Uganda’s Anti Homosexuality Bill 2009, Pastor Rick Warren released this video, speaking directly to pastors in Uganda:

Truth Wins Out’s Wayne Besen was first to respond, thanking Warren for speaking out:

TWO Praises Pastor Rick Warren for Speaking Out Against Anti-Gay Uganda Bill

Warren Calls Bill ‘Unjust’, ‘Extreme’ and ‘Unchristian’

NEW YORK – Truth Wins Out thanked Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, today for releasing a YouTube Statement condemning the “Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009” that is currently before the Ugandan Parliament. Lisa Darden, a talent agent and filmmaker working on a film about reconciling the Christian and GLBT communities, coordinated the statement with Warren’s church.

“We applaud Rick Warren for speaking out with force and clarity on a bill that would lead to the persecution and prosecution of gay and lesbian Ugandans,” said Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out. “Today, Warren showed true moral courage and stood for what is right and just. We urge other leading pastors and world leaders to stand up and condemn Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill.”

In the video, Warren said he was taking “the extraordinary step of speaking to you, the pastors of Uganda and the spiritual leaders of your nation.” He unequivocally condemned the legislation as “extreme, unjust and unchristian towards homosexuals”. He also urged Ugandan pastors to “speak out against this proposed law.”

UPDATED: While this surely is an important and positive development to hopefully halt the horrid bill before it becomes law, let’s not forget where Rick Warren stands. Here’s a reminder. In this interview, Anne Curry asks – what if gay sexual orientation is biological. Warren says, that’s nice to know – but “we all struggle with predispositions.” Oh, it goes on for there….

I trust Rick Warren about as far as I can throw him. He’s discovering that his homophobia casts him in a bad light, and he’s backpedaling as hard and fast as he can. But what he has said in the past shows us how he REALLY feels, and that leopard ain’t changing his spots.

God did not create marriage. Marriage was created by misogynistics who felt they needed to possess their women. Misogamy is still rampant throughout the world, thinking that men are superior to women. God does not care about gender. Homosexuality is a natural occurrence in all of nature. Humans, it seems to me, created God in their image, and not the other way around. God is unconditional love. Period.
