As AIDS Healthcare Foundation consultant Miki Jackson reported previously on LGBT POV – the state is considering making drastic cuts to HIV/AIDS social services – including the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) to help stem the state budget crisis. The latest information is that California faces a $20.7 BILLION deficit.
In light of these concerns, Assemblymember Dave Jones, chair of the Assembly Health Committee, is holding a hearing on World AIDS Day tomorrow, Dec. 1, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan State Office Building, 300 S. Spring Street, 1st Floor Auditorium, in downtown Los Angeles.

During the past month-plus, I’ve traversed America, touring the twentieth anniversary production of intimacies, a solo performance piece that ostensibly tells bygone stories about HIV/AIDS. While my mission is to entertain and enlighten through the artistic experience, the impact of the ongoing tour encompasses much more; merging the past with the present is tricky, inevitably leading to back-and-forth emotions that both comfort and disturb. Art Center College of Design will commemorate a historic mural created by artist Keith Haring on the 20th anniversary of his visit to the College and in recognition of World AIDS Day on November 30, said Art Center President, Lorne Buchman.
In 1989, the prolific artist and social activist Keith Haring visited Art Center College of Design and painted an interior mural, which still hangs in the Colleges’ landmark building. Haring passed away two months later from AIDS-related complications in February 1990.
The Keith Haring tribute reception will take place Monday, November 30 at 6:00 p.m. at Art Center’s James Lemont Fogg Memorial Library, located at 1700 Lida Street in Pasadena, California. The event is free and open to the public. Click inside for more on Keith Haring and the tribute.
In observation of World AIDS Day, the Williams Institute is hosting a panel on current developments in HIV/AIDS law and public policy. The City of West Hollywood will commemorate World AIDS Day on Tuesday, Dec. 1 by presenting the annual Paul Starke Warrior Award to outstanding members of the community working in HIV/AIDS services.
Special guest speakers will include actress,Emmy-nominatedtelevision personality, independent filmmaker and gay icon Ricki Lake; Marie Da Silva, CNN Hero 2008 and founder of the “Jacaranda Foundation;” and Brenda Goodman, board President of Aid for AIDS. Many of them would not be here today, but for the dedication of other persons living with HIV, their loved ones and families, community advocates, and members of the medical profession. On World AIDS Day, we rededicate ourselves to developing a national AIDS strategy that will establish the priorities necessary to combat this devastating epidemic at home, and to renewing our leadership role and commitments abroad.
