As the federal Prop 8 trial goes on hiatus for a month or two before closing arguments, Love Honor Cherish has re-emerged seeking signatures for their repeal Prop 8 in 2010 initiative campaign.
One of four locations for signature-gathering on Sunday is from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Staples Center in advance of the Grammy Awards. Volunteers are asked to meet at the SW corner of Chick Hearn (11th) and Figueroa Blvds. (LHC advises to park in private lots east of Figueroa on Olympic Blvd. & 11th streets and note that it’s cheaper the further east one travels.
In their press release, LHC notes that they need 1 million signatures in the next 13 weeks. “Let’s get thousands this weekend!” Click inside for the other locations and news about antigay Grammy nominee Buju Banton.
“We’re shocked that Buju Banton, a singer with a long record of performing a song that glorifies the murder of gay people, would be honored with a Grammy nomination, regardless of the artistic merit of any of his work.”
Similar complaints were made in 2001 about a young white rapper named Eminem whose lyrics were often violent towards women and gays. Artists such as Elton John defended Eminem’s poetry and his right to artistic expression. (Click inside to read more and see the video of Elton John and Eminem performing at the Grammys.) But in the case of Buju Banton, the more likely defense would be a cultural assumption that Banton’s Jamaican reggae dance hall “murder music” is a kissing-cousin to the catchy empowering tunes of the beloved late singer Bob Marley. The two could not be more different. Here’s the unique documentary Playing for Change version of Marley’s still moving “One Love.”
What might have started out as a good intention to make a peaceful overture to and a photo op with a hater has turned into an uproar in California and Jamaica. Click inside for photos of Thursday night’s protest – and new word from Buju Banton that he’s still at war with gays.
There is a protest against Buju Banton’s appearance in Hollywood tonight. The Jamaican antigay “murder” singer is successfully eroding the previously successful boycott against him after his meeting Monday with a handful of gays. Click inside for details.
I’m not starteld by much any more. But this morning’s headline from Michael Petrelis was a jaw-dropper: “SF Gays Meet With Buju Banton; His First Sit-Down with Gays.” This post struggles to deal with the news and my reaction to it. Update: Andrea Shorter just sent me her comment.
To quote Peter, Paul and Mary singing Bob Dylan: “When will they ever learn? When will they ev-er learn?”
Thanks to the diligence of the LA Gay & Lesbian Center and pressure from people who responded to their alert, the Sunset Entertainment Group canceled the Oct. 15 Hollywood concert of Buju “”Faggots. . . have to die” Banton. This is the latest in a national effort to stop the reggae hater from spreading his hate. Click inside for details – including the Sunset Entertainment Group’s stern email canceling the concert – for the sake of business.
