In roughly a 20-minute ceremony filled with casual good humor in Washington DC late Friday afternoon, David Huebner was sworn in as the openly gay US Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa before about 100 friends and supporters.
Standing by his side throughout was his spouse of 20 years, Dr. Duane McWaine, who has a psychiatry practice here in Culver City. David Huebner will be sworn in today by Vice President Joe Biden at 4:00pm, 3:45 EST in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building wing of the White House. He becomes the first politically appointed openly gay Senate-confirmed ambassador in US history.
