TheCall rally 2 (Editor’s note: David Link lives in Sacramento and strolled down to watch the Religious Right fireworks promised by evangelical firebrand Lou Engle at the state Capitol. He heard the usual fundy Christian screed – but what struck him the most about this widely publicized event was how fewer than expected people showed up, gauging by the jumbo-tron set up with speakers blaring to no one. This is very different from the Sacramento Bee’s early report. David also shot the photos – Karen Ocamb)

TheCall’s Empty Spaces

By David Link

I couldn’t help myself, and wandered downtown today to see what was up with “TheCall.”  I’d seen a news story about it last night, where the rally at Raley Field (our Triple A Baseball team, the River Cats plays there) seemed to draw several thousand people.  They said today’s rally at the Capitol was expected to have 50,000 attendees.  I’d normally be skeptical about that estimate, but my office is located on Capitol Mall at Third Street, and they were erecting stages and giant screens on every grassy median island on Capitol Mall from Third to Tenth, where Capitol Mall meets the west steps of the Capitol.

If the city was closing down virtually all of West Capitol Malll, they were clearly anticipating that this would be the real deal.

It wasn’t.

The Call Tony Perkins.JPGTony Perkins, head of the antigay Family Research Council, is “saddened” by the news about former GOP heavy weight Ken Mehlman coming out as gay, according to an email to supporters he sent during a break from his vacation.  Perkins (pictured) says that Mehlman has “chosen” to identify himself as gay. I guess Perkins didn’t read Mehlman’s interview with The Atlantic or skipped that part where it took Mehlman 43 years to “choose” that identity.

But there are so many other interesting tid-bits in Perkins’ email. Please click inside to read Perkins’ email and the questions that arise from it.

MUST WATCH. CLEAREST JUXTAPOSITION BETWEEN TRUTH AND LIES I’VE EVER SEEN! Also – please note that Tony Perkins alludes to legislation being introduced when Congress is called back this week – which presumably means the radical right will re-introduce a federal constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage.

On MSNBC’s Countdown Monday night, Keith Olbermann challenged right wing talk show hosts Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh to sue Law & Order: SVU creator Dick Wolfe after a character – John Larroquette playing a Southern-accented defense attorney – claimed in an episode that the talkers “spread ignorance and hate” and the right wingers complained.

The Call Tony PerkinsBut there has been no similar outrage or even snarky finger-pointing at Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins who is organizing the grassroots Religious Right leaders in a way that might have considerably more far-reaching effect. Click inside to see how I connect the dots.

Chuck Colson - Tony FRCWatch out. Former Watergate felon and now Religious Right point person Chuck Colson is at it again. This time with a “Manhattan Declaration” of so-called Christian principles delivered at the National Press Club today with all the splash of a Hollywood PR campaign.

You can read the entire “declaration” at the Family Research Council (whose president, Tony Perkins is pictured here with Church Colson). Click inside to read some excerpts and reactions.

Here’s Chuck Colson’s tease:

TheCAll - lou screamsI originally wrote about the Religious Right rally dubbed TheCall for The Bilerico Project Nov. 2, 2008. It still holds up. And while the National Organization for Marriage and the Protect Marriage franchise are trying to export their Prop 8 victory to Maine and Washington state and beyond – these extreme Religious Right professionals are their secret weapon. Dethroned Miss California Carrie Prejean’s pastor, Miles McPherson, is on that stage, for instance. Click inside to read my report about this religious revival meeting in Qualcomm Stadium.

Former GLSEN director and current Department of Education official Kevin Jennings is fast becoming a favorite fundraising tool of Religious Right professionals, akin to the outrageous “witch hunts” orchestrated against President Barack Obama and the Clintons.

In this most recent fundraising email newsletter, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council uses a photo of Kevin Jennings next to a story about hate crimes – which has nothing to do with Jennings. Doesn’t mention his name once. See for yourself.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council just released this whine about the judge’s ruling in Dallas:
The Big ‘D’ in Dallas: Divorce
A judge in the Dallas District Court system seems to have made a sudden career change. In the middle of a case on same-sex “divorce,” Judge Tena Callahan abandoned her job of upholding [...]
